March 24, 1965 Millions of Americans see it live on television
On this day in 1965 the Ranger 9 spacecraft hurtles through the crater Alphonsus Face visible from the moon and lands on him. Millions of Americans watch the live television broadcast from home. space probe Ranger 9 was the first American ship to obtain close images of the lunar surface. He had six cameras mounted on the inside that relayed independently.
