March 24, 1965 Millions of Americans see it live on television
On this day in 1965 the Ranger 9 spacecraft hurtles through the crater Alphonsus Face visible from the moon and lands on him. Millions of Americans watch the live television broadcast from home. space probe Ranger 9 was the first American ship to obtain close images of the lunar surface. He had six cameras mounted on the inside that relayed independently. There were other probes Ranger, namely Ranger Ranger 7 and 8, which also landed on the moon, in the first case, in an area with very little visibility and the second on very steep terrain made it difficult to image transmission.
